Up/Down (Bidirectional) counter without "Jam" or "Preset" needed with output enable for bus application.

Can anyone let me know if there is something like this, since it will save maybe 40 unneeded pads/traces in my design. I also need to have 3-state HiZ output enable. Nothing I find is like this. Must be cascadable, so 4-bit may be best. I have a 19-bit bus, so 3 x 8-bit is a waste, 16-bit not enough, etc. Thanks very much.

  • Walter,

I might be able to help but I will need more information -- a schematic is best, but answers to the following will suffice:

    1. What supply voltages are available?

    2. What data voltages are used?

    3. What interface will program the counter(s) (if any)?

    4. Could the HiZ state be achieved with a digital bus switch instead of being internal to the counters?  Will the counters be sourcing/sinking significant current while in operation?

    5. You mentioned a 19-bit bus -- is that the required length of the counter?  Will it be counting to 524287?  Is it important that it stops at that value or can it count beyond that?
