Resonance Phase Locked Loop

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CD4046B, SN74LV4046A

Hello

I am trying to generate a resonance phase locked loop for a ultrasonic application. I have a transducer which I want to operate at resonant frequency. Its resonant frequency will change during operation. So, I want to create a resonant phase locked loop system. I think, I need to use function generator to create ultrasonic frequency. Is it possible to use CD4046be for ultrasonic signal generation as well as to develop a resonant phase locked system ? If not, can you guide me how to use signal generator and CD4046b together so that I can always operate transducer at resonant frequency.

Thanking you

  • Vijay,

I'm moving your post to the Logic Forum. They will be better equipped to answer your questions on the CD4046 device.
  • Thanks Amy.

    Vijay,
Can you elaborate on your application? Exactly what frequency (or frequencies) are you planning to generate? What voltage will the system be operating at?
Any schematics or additional information would be helpful.

  • Hi
I am working on an ultrasonic drilling application. A work piece will be vibrated by a transducer and a hole will be drilled in a workpiece through drill bit. A transducer has a resonant frequency 28 KHz, and max. input power 50 Watt. The resonant frequency of system will change during operation due to drilling. I am thinking of using a signal generator to generate ultrasonic frequency (mostly in the range of 25KHz-35 KHz) and then using an amplifier to drive the transducer. I need to always operate the system close to resonant frequency to avoid the losses. So, I was thinking to the lock the phase difference between the current and voltage going through transducer (lock the phase difference around 10 degree) and using phase locked loop it can indicate the desired frequency to the signal generator to produce.I understand the basic concept but I do not know how to interface the signal generator with CD4046be chip (phase locking circuit).

I think this part will work for what you are trying to do, but the implementation will likely require prototyping and testing in the lab.  I would recommend getting some samples of this part as well as SN74LV4046A and start your testing with simply producing the desired frequency from the internal VCO.

The frequency generation will only require R1 and C1, but R2 can be used to create a frequency offset.  The diagram on the front page of the datasheet shows how to connect the device for operation comparing an input at pin 14 to the internally generated frequency.

This document contains some examples using the CD4046.
