ESD protection CD4504B

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CD4504B

Hi,

According the datasheet, all inputs of the CD4504B are protected by an CMOS protection network, which is not further specified.

Is this CMOS protection network adequate for ESD events of 15K, or do I need to add additional ESD suppressors?

For example, the TPD4E004DRYR. Which immediately raises another question.

In my case, Vcc is 3.3 V and according the datasheet the absolute maximum input voltage is Vcc + 0.5 V.

The breakdown voltage of the TPD4E004DRYR is 6 V. Is this OK, or is the breakdown voltage to high (> 3.3 + 0.5)?

I would expect that the inputs of CD4504B would survive at least 20V.

Thanks.

  • Hi LT Smit ,

I do not find any ESD numbers for CD4504B as such but I would say here that abs max for CD4K parts are 20V . The recommended operating voltage is 18V and as long as you operate under 20V , the device should handle it . Beyond 20V , the reliability of the device would be compromised .
TPD device is from another group under TI which I wouldn't be the right person to contact and couldnt answer for them .
Vcc+0.5V indicates a positive ESD diode to Vcc ,so you will need to limit the current whenever the voltage exceeds Vcc in order to not turn on the internal ESD .
  • Dear Shreyas,

    Thanks for your answer.

Is it possible to find the ESD numbers for the CD4504B within TI, as this is the essence of the question?
With this numbers, it is possible to judge whether external ESD protection is necessary or not.
  • Hi Smit,

I am unsure about this since this is an old part which was inherited from Harris semiconductors and we do not have much info on this .
You can probably try the quality and package tab on the product folder of CD4504B and try contacting the quality team .This may be redirected to CQE of our team to provide answers .
You can also try to send in your question along with the exact package to sales_support@ti.com for assistance .
