Difference between level translator and Line Driver

Hi,

Ref: TI product lines:

1. Voltage Level Translation

2. Buffer/Driver/Transceiver

What is the exact difference between the two product lines. It seems one can voltage traslate from a Buffer/Driver/Transceiver also. Kindly suggest when to use a Buffer/Driver/ Transceiver and when to use level translator product.

I have 7 PWM outputs from TMS320f28069 (3.3V Logic), want to drive IGBT Driver (which requires 5V Logic). Which product line should I go with, to select an interface IC??

I'll take a look at the TMS320F28069 datasheet to see if a level translator is a suitable choice.

What I am more interested is to know how

1. To decide to go with voltage translator or a line driver/buffer; and what parameters to look for while deciding for translator or a driver.

2. Construction wise what is the difference in the two.

Hi Siddharth,

you could use a buffer as a voltage translator. There are passive voltage translation which use pullup resistors for translation. Buffers can be considered as translation with drive . The LV1T family of logic translation devices are an example of this .
for maximizing translation from a node to another , the input Vih/ Vil levels must be optimized. The standard CMOS translation for 5V will be 3.5V , which a 3.3V part wont work here since the Voh min will be about 2.9V . So the Vih of the level shifter device must be optimized for 2V to accept this.
