4 - 16 Data Line Demultiplexer with High Current rating

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: L293D, DRV8835

Hi ,

I am trying to run 4 Stepper Motors from a Micro Controller, Instead of using uC's GPIOs ,

I am thinking of using 4-16 Demultiplexer, One possible way is to use 4* 1-4 Demux with shorted address pins.

Is there any IC which can do this ? Or How do I achieve this design?

Another question is as I am driving the Motors using Motor driver [ I need to use 4 Motor Drivers , which I am trying to reduce by putting the Motor Driver before the Demux circuit ]. But Motor Driver like L293D or DRV8835  puts up a max 1A current , Is there any Demux which can handle that much Input Current and Heat Dissipation.  Suggestion of alternative design is welcome.

Thanks in Advance

  • hi Naveen ,

The suggestions on using the mux is given below : I have filtered 1:4 and 1:8Mux and 1:16 Mux.

1A is a lot of current which can increase the junction temp of the signal switches . The load switches are suitable for higher current pass through due to their low ron resistances in mohms. The signal switches ron will be in ohms which will result in large voltage drop across the switch.

  • Thanks for the Info Shreyas,

So its not a good Idea to use the Motor driver before Demux , And the 4-16 line decoders also have 1 data line, I had a requirement of 4 input data lines , Which I think have to design from 4 - 1:4 Demux chips,

Is having a Digital Mux a Good Idea or using Analog one is better , As there will be PWM wave on the Data Line.

Is there any 4 Dataline Demux or decoder available ?

    With Regards
