CD4013 BM

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TL331

Hi, I have a big problem by  CD4013 BM with SMD package by using the power supply bigger then +6VDC.

the schematic is very simple, it's simple divider per 2.

I've seen, that this problem makes only the SMD package. The DIL package for CD4013 is OK also for VDD =+18VDC.

Is there may be some errors in datasheet for CD 4013 SMD, regarding to the using of the max. possible voltage range?

  • hi tonicc ,

All CD4013 devices adhere to the datasheet specs so there is no per package spec for the same device .
how many devices did you test , what is problem exactly when you say Vcc>6V doesn't work? please send out a schematic or scope shots which helps in the debugging . please let know the top side markings for the device .
  • Hi Shreyas,

my problem is,  that @ Vdd = +12VDC, the package temperature will go to around +55°C and the current will be 0,1 A.

otherwise @  +6VDC stay temperature of the package by +20°C.

when I put on the place of the CD4013BM a one CD4013 with DIL package, so I can go to VDD =+18VDC and the temperature of the package stay always by ambient temperature +20 °C without increasing.

  • This points to a defective device to me , did you try replacing another SOIC device to observe the same performance issue ?
This is off the topic but just a suggestion. The pullup resistor could slow down the signal input at clk and could you try putting a Schmitt trigger in front of clk input after the pullup to have sharper transition rate?
  • Hi Shreyas,

I've already tried 6pcs of CD4013BM, and the result was always the same.

I've tried also another clock frequency by the1kHz. and there was always the same problem with the temperature.

    adding info - the DIL device , that I used for the temperature and current comparing is "CD4013BE".}

now another question:  does TI produce a chip like "silikon oscilator LTC1799CS5 " in small package, where I can get at the output the frequency between 300 - 600kHz? but with duty cycle 50% exactly.

at my aplication that you have seen in thi picture, is this device CD4013 used only for getting the duty cycle to 50%

thanks a lot for your help.

    Tonicc.

  • Hi Tonicc ,

it is unfortunate to hear that all 6 you have tried is not working . With the PDIP working fine , it should rule out the connection issues too . All I would suggest is to have another fresh samples to try out .
you could send the problem devices to our FA team to analyze further to rule out any ESD damage underneath.

TI does a lot of devices and I am quite sure that there will be a cross for this too. Please try here .

  • Hi Shreyas,

yes I can try it out later with another fresh device parts of your production.
a.)but now I would like to see the functionality by another device - f.e. SMD CD4027BM.
b.) or another option is; to try out the CD4047 - generator with integrated flip-flop.

so I will post you my results. for now many thanks for your efort.

    {P.S.: and please! the problem with CD4013BM, can send it you to your FA team. because I have no contact to this department.}

    thanks a lot in advance.
    Tonicc.
  • Hi Shreyas,

I was looking for details of my problem during the last weekend and I 've found very intersting issue:

I tested another flip flops such as CD4027 by the outside of my PCB (my schematic, that already you seen thereinbefore) but connected to the oscilator TL331 of  my schematic.

then after many times looking to PCB with CD4013, I 've seen a stupid error by the grounding to pin 7 of CD4013.

The autorouter of the PCB program did not make the connection "GND - pin7".

this is and was very interesting case, that CD4013 was working over one and only grounding of the pins SET and RESET. thouse are Mosfets inputs and for all that, the generall supplying to CD4013 was sufficient.

I've seen the CD4013 was working and I never thought that could be missing something like power GND. so then I 've always seen only problems by voltage over Vdd > +6, +7VDC.

I am sorry for all, now everything is working perfect ! no problems with supply current, no problems with temperature also @ VDD = +18VDC.

    best regards,

    tonicc

  • Hi Tonicc,

I am glad it worked out fine at the end. Sorry isn't necessary , I am glad to help and hear these cases out which may help everybody else out there. with gnd floating the lowest potential will act as gnd. This will also lead to the break down scenarios for the part while gnd is floated.
