Termination

Hi,

May I know the difference between parallel and series termination. How we will decide when to use series termination and when to use parallel termination.

Regards

Hari

  • Hi Hari ,

Is there any specific application you have mind for the question.
Usually , series resistors are used at the output for damping the signal to avoid overshoots and ringing, parallel termination is used in impedance matching for max power transfer, in high impedance current generators. A combination of series and parallel termination is used as well.
This is especially important for high speed signals to have right termination to not have reflection and degrade the signal quality.
You could refer to the design considerations with logic app note for more info page 202:

  • Hi Sherayas,

Thank you very much. There is no specific application application in my mind.I have one more question in some applications we can see that termination resistor is connected to some voltage and in some other applications we can see that termination resistor is connected to ground. How to decide when we need to connect the termination resistor to a voltage or not.
