SN74HC594 Continuous Output Current Question

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74HC594, SN74AHCT595, SN74LVC244A

Hi,

I would like to know what the maximum continuous output drive current is for shift register SN74HC594.

I need to output 6mA @ 5V for each of the 8 output channels for a total of 48mA.  The datasheet shows that it can drive 6mA @ 5V but the Continuous Output current is limited to 35mA according to the AMR.  Is the 35mA the limit for all 8 channels combined?

Also, do we have a 74HCT594 version of this part for TTL operation?

Thanks,

Chuchen

  • Hi chuchen ,

There is SN74AHCT595 to consider , but couldn't find any SN74HCT594.
What is the application need you have for the higher drive current ?
I would suggest to drive a buffer like SN74LVC244A which supports higher current drive. The AMR applies for single channel , however , will have to consider the max current through Vcc or gnd as well. Going above recommended conditions is not advised.
  • Hi Shreyas,

They don't have room for buffers on the board but it seems like it should be able to drive 6mA per output (48mA total) with no issues correct?  The Continuous Current through VCC is 70mA according to the AMR.

    Thanks,

    Chuchen

  • Hi Chuchen,

Yes , it can drive 6mA per output without issues.
All the recommended conditions are per output unless noted .
