PCA9306: Request to suggest other similar level translator

Part Number: PCA9306
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TXS0102, LSF0102

Hi ,

I am using PCA9306 for transfer 1.8V I2C and ether MDIO/MDC signals to 3.3V.

Please suggest me if there is any other part which is same or better in performance.

Thanks & Regards,

Madhu

  • Hello Madhu,

Do you need buffering or do you only need translation/level shifting?  Also, what mode will you operate at?  Standard, Fast Mode, Fast Mode Plus???

I have attached a selection guide link below.

  • Hi Francis,

    Thanks for the reply.

I need both level shifting and buffering. Maximum frequency is 2.5Mhz.

  • Hello Madhu,
You need to go to "High Speed" mode in I2C to get up to 2.5MHz. Fast Mode Plus goes up to 1MHz and that is usually the highest that people used I2C devices unless there are some special applications. We do have parts that support Fast Mode Plus, the TCA9517B. That would be my suggestion. Where did the 2.5MHz number come from? I don't know many slaves that support those high data rates. Remember this is open drain so it is generally a lot slower than push-pull types of protocols.

  • Hi Francis,

The value 2.5MHz is not of any I2C device, but an ethernet PHY's MDIO interface ( Marvell's 88E1111).

I am planning to use same level translator device for both MDIO and I2C interfaces.

Whether TCA9517B can be used for both of these interfaces?

    Regards,

    Madhu

  • Hello Madhu,

Unfortunately we don't have anything that supports these high data rates in I2C group.  Your best bet is either the LSF0102 or the TXS0102 translators.  I know they both support open drain.  I just don't know max data rates at what cap load.  I am moving this to the Translation E2E.  They should be able to help you better.
