SN74LVC16T245: SN74LVCxx and HCxxx serial products support Hot plug?

Part Number: SN74LVC16T245

Hi Team,

It seems our old version product such as SN74LVTxxx products will support hot insert(hot plug) and we can confirm this point in our datasheet. However, for our SN74LVCxx and HCxx products, we can't find any hot plug support information in the datasheet, so will these products also support hot plug? How can I select suitable products that support hot plug for customers?

Thanks a lot for your support! I'm now trying to select some products that support hot plug for customer.

Best regards,

Sulyn

  • Hi Sulyn,
There are multiple levels of 'hot plug support' that are available. Most of our newer device have the lowest level of support, which is called "Partial power down" or "Ioff" support. The other two levels are far less common in logic devices, and I believe only show up in a handful of devices. They are more prevalent in analog switches.

There is an app note that goes into some detail here: www.ti.com/.../scea026.pdf

As for selecting products for a customer, you're really going to have to understand the application thoroughly to get the right part for them. When they say 'hot plug' what do they mean? Is the bus active on one board when a daughter board is connected? Or is communication only started after connecting? Do they follow good practices (ie is ground connected _first_ to the incoming device, then power, and finally data lines?). We need to know data rates, load conditions, directionality, etc.

With good system design, the need for advanced hot-plug features goes away in most cases.
