The data sheet does not mention what potential to connect the exposed pad to. Is it grounded or left floating?

The thermal pad is best tied directly to a large ground plane, however it is not required to operate the device -- please see our FAQ for logic devices for the complete answer: e2e.ti.com/.../3541.06-package-pinout
