SN74LV4046A: Is there a VCO frequency chart or formula for this part?

Part Number: SN74LV4046A

The data sheet for this PLL chip mentions that the VCO has been improved relative to its old CD4046 predecessor. However, the data sheet contains no help on choosing the values of timing Rs and C that make the VCO fly.

Has anyone seen an app note for this part?

How much do the timing resistors and capacitors differ from the old CD4xxx series part?

Hi Jim,

This part operates the same as the SN74HC4046A, which has a much more informative datasheet. There's also an application report "CMOS Phase-Locked-Loop Applications Using the CD54/74HC/HCT4046A and CD54/74HC/HCT7046A" that can be used for the SN74LV4046A.

The primary difference between the two devices is that the LV device has stronger output drivers and thus is slightly faster and uses more power (about 2.5x the dynamic power of the HC family device). In most circumstances, I would recommend going with the HC version since documentation is far better and more widely available.
