CD40103B: CMOS , How about the ESD level of CD4000,74HC,74HCT?

Part Number: CD40103B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CD74HC40103, CD74HCT40103

CD40103B, CD74HC40103,CD74HCT40103,the speed is up, How about the ESD level of CD4000,74HC,74HCT?

  • Hi Xianrong,
I will look into this and get back to you.
  • When I debug my frequency divider board, the CD40103BNSR is broken easily.

Please refer to the below picutures, there're two CD40103BNSR, with the name IC1,IC7. the pin1 of the IC1,IC7 are given the same clock(input), the pin 4,5,6,7,10,11,12,13 are connected to the MCU, the pin 14,15 are the output, however, the output frequency of the IC1 ,IC7 are not same. Then, replace the IC7 with a new CD40103BNSR, the outputs are the same. I'm not sure why the IC7 is always abnormal.

I find there're two other P2P part: CD74HC40103M96, CD74HCT40103M96, so I want to know what's the ESD level of them, and which is the best choice for my board??

    CD40103BNSR,CD74HC40103M96,CD74HCT40103M96.

  • Hey Xianrong,
I looked into the qualification reports on these three devices, and here's what I found:
CD40103B - not tested for ESD protection
    CD74HC40103 - HBM: 1kV, MM: 200V, CDM 200V
CD74HCT40103 - not tested for ESD protection

I should note that these are all parts that were acquired by TI from Harris Semiconductor. It's likely that they all have the same ESD structures on the inputs, and have the same ratings, but since it's not listed in the datasheet, and I don't have a qual report for 2 of them, I can only give the above answers.

    -----

Are you certain that these are ESD failures?

Would it be possible to get scope shots of input/output signals from a good and failing unit?
  • Thank you very much. Emrys Maier.

I'll be careful when debugging later. and I will send the fail CD40103 to the CQE, if the failure happens next time.
