SN74HC157: Will occaisional slow transitions do any damage?

Part Number: SN74HC157

I am feeding a 74HC157 data selector with a pair of 4 bit absolute encoders through an RC filter for switch bounce (100 usec TC).
Ideally, I could use a pair of 74HCS125 Schmitt buffers to get a fast transition time for the HC157, but I would like to know, for occaisional switching on one encoder, is the current spike anything to worry about due to slow transition through the active area?
Note, I don't have to worry about oscillations because the program has a delay after geting an interupt. I am only worried about hurting the HC157.
  • Hey Bill,

Its possible that you will see damage with that slow of an input. However, there will be an HCS version of that device coming pretty soon that will be drop in and will have no issues with those slow transition times. If it meets your timeline, i'd recommend checking back in towards in the end of August for this device or utilizing a schmitt -trigger buffer to help speed up the transitions prior to the HC157 device.
