SN54LVTH16244A: Internal ESD Protection

Team,

Can you share information about the internal ESD protection on the SN54LVTH16244A?

I need to design a protection circuit that interfaces with this buffer against a 4kV ESD transient following the Human Body Model. Current part is rated for 2kV HBM ESD which is not enough against 4kV. If information about the ESD protection circuit on this IC cannot be shared, then information about the type of diode (Silicon, Schottky, Zener) or breakdown voltage would help.

Let me know if there is a recommended way of designing an external ESD protection circuit that interfaces with this buffer (like an application note).

This device has the equivalent of a 7 V Zener diode at the inputs.

If your circuit does not use input voltages higher than V_CC, then you can simply add two (Schottky) diodes in series from GND and to V_CC in order to steer the ESD current to the power supply; see Protecting Inputs from Damage— EOS. Also see Does BAV99 Really Protect My System from ESD?

If you do need overvoltage-tolerant inputs, you have to add an external ESD/TVS diode.

This device has device-level ESD protection intended for protecting the IC while in an ESD safe manufacturing environment. This app note discusses the difference between device-level and system-level ESD protection in detail: Design considerations for system-level ESD circuit protection

TI offers a wide variety of ESD protection devices that will prevent damage to this device if placed appropriately. There is no need to start from scratch designing a protection circuit to interface with the internal workings of this device to do this - just add a system-level ESD protection device: https://www.ti.com/interface/circuit-protection/esd-protection-and-tvs-surge-diodes/overview.html

These devices are tiny and low cost -- I can't think of a reason why it would be better to design your own.
