SN54ACT14: Okay to short output?

Part Number: SN54ACT14

Team,

Is it okay to permanently short one of the outputs on this device when running at 5V?

Condition: one output was shorted for hours at ambient temperature with part Vcc at 5V with input toggling hundreds of times during test.

Thank you.

  • Hi,

Short answer: No, this more than likely will violate the IOL or IOH spec of the device. You'll want to leave any unused outputs floating.

If you're concerned with the device's functionality after an accidental short, I have the following questions:

    • Was the device shorted to ground or VCC?
    • Did the device have any inputs at the time of the short? Edit: I see that the input was toggling. I would consider the output FET to be fried at this point.

    Thanks!

    Chad Crosby
