SN74HCS596: General function question

Im looking to use an sn74hcs596 8bit shift register.

Want to cascade 4 together for a 32 bit shift Reg.
Shift in data, but keep output unchanged during shifting
After shifting is done, latch the the new output.

It seems this part will perform that function correct?

Yes, this device can be used like that.

The SN74HCS595 is the more commonly used version. The difference between them is that the '595 has push-pull outputs and the '596 has open-drain outputs.

This reference design shows a couple of examples of cascading the '595, but it would be the same for the '596.
