SN74AHC1G14: input clamp diodes and the value of Iik

Part Number: SN74AHC1G14

According to our document szza036c.pdf (Understanding and Interpreting Standard-Logic Data Sheets), AHC devices should have the clamp diodes in place (page 25). The datasheet for this part however shows the abs max value of input clamp current (Iik) as -20mA, instead of ±20mA. Can you comment on that?

Thank you!

  • Hi,

The abs max value of -20mA means that this device only has a clamp from VCC to the input pin, and no clamp to GND. More commonly, our devices will have clamps from GND to the input, but this is an exception.

The diagram on page 25 of the AN you mentioned was meant to be an example of what our clamp diodes could look like - it wasn't meant to say that this is what all of our protection structures look like.

The abs max value of -20 mA indicates that the diode clamp current can only flow out of the input, indicating that there is only one clamp diode and it is connected from GND to the input. [Emrys]

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!
