MSP432E401Y: Which solution to choose for a cloud gateway for 15.4 network

Part Number: MSP432E401Y

We're investigating a better solution to connect our 15.4 stack network to the cloud (currently on a 15.4 linux SDK).

I thought the MSP432E4 would be a great solution to act as a gateway because it has an ethernet connection but as I read here it seems that the MSP432 line is discontinued. This seems to be backed up by the fact that there has been no SDK update for the MSP432 for over more then a year.

Now an alternative would be to use a CC line device like the CC32xx and connect to the cloud over Wifi. But again when investigating this I found that the 15.4 stack plugin for this is not updated for over more then 3 years!!

So there seems to be nog good solution (or am I missing something) for a gateway for our 15.4 network other then our current linux gateway which is expensive, cumbersome and hard to maintain.

On top of that all the linux gateway isn't getting much attention from TI anyways as besides some maintenance releases no new functionality has been added the last year (like secure commisioning).

So all in all I'm a bit worried where TI is heading with this (if anywhere at all). Can you please shed some light on this and advise what according to TI is the way forward for connecting 15.4 network to the cloud?

thanks,

Marijn

  • Hi,

First, I'll comment briefly on the MSP432 from what I know.

I thought the MSP432E4 would be a great solution to act as a gateway because it has an ethernet connection but as I read here it seems that the MSP432 line is discontinued.

Thanks for sharing this link. In it, it states that there "will be no new MSP432 products".
This does not mean we will stop offering support -- in fact, you can see that there is still activity regarding the MSP423: (+) Search - TI E2E support forums

If you have further questions specifically related to MSP432 products, I recommend creating another post specifically towards that regard.

Now an alternative would be to use a CC line device like the CC32xx and connect to the cloud over Wifi. But again when investigating this I found that the 15.4 stack plugin for this is not updated for over more then 3 years!!

Regarding this 15.4 plugin (embedded gateway):
at the moment, this is to be expected, as discussed in a previous post: (+) SIMPLELINK-SDK-TI-15-4-STACK-PLUGIN: Is there a timeline for an update to the latest SDK for this? - MSP low-power microcontroller forum - MSP low-power microcontrollers - TI E2E support forums

It is still possible to port, starting from the existing plugin, to the latest SDK.
The serial commands are documented here: http://software-dl.ti.com/lprf/ti15.4stack_linux_x64/2.01.00.10/exports/docs/TI-15.4%20Stack%20CoP%20Interface%20Guide.pdf

Our team is internally in discussion about our gateway offerings (embedded and linux), however I cannot provide a timeline here.
Feedback like yours is valuable and appreciated -- if there are other specific concerns or needs you are considering for a gateway application, please share and we can take this into account.

    Thanks,
    Toby

  • Hi Toby,

    Thanks for the reply.

I understand that there is still active support for issues on the MSP432 but that is vastly different than actively developing on an SDK and bringing out new/updated variants of the products like the CC line is seeing.

Just the fact that the product MSP432E4 is not discontinued does not mean it is a good fit to start a whole new development based on it, and that's actually the question I'm facing now.

So can you inform me if the MSP432 SDK will see any future updates?

I know that I can update the existing plugin with the code from the latest CC SDK but defeats the whole purpose of the Simplelink plugin ecosystem. I have no issues getting that to work but it will cost extra time and I do not like to invest that time in a product that will see EOL in the near future.

What we need for a 15.4 subGHz gateway solution is: ethernet connection, an embedded solution, (no linux), OTA firmware upgrades, secure commissioning, and a product that is actively being supported/updated.

    Best regards,

    Marijn

I have notify the MSP432 team to comment on this.

Thanks for the feedback here; I have passed it along internally.
We will take this as part of consideration for gateways.

  • Thanks! will they comment in this thread?

Hope to see some good news regarding 15.4 subGHz gateway solution soon!

  • Hi ,

Currently our team is busy with new platform development. We have received some feedback about MSP432E SDK, but the update time will be delayed. As MSP432E is not a direction that is focused by our team. I think the SDK update will focus on fixing bugs. Sorry, it is not good news.

    Eason

  • Thanks Eason, it might not be good new per se but at least a clear answer.

So Simplelink will be only focusing on wireless in the future?

We really need ethernet connectivity for our gateway so the it looks like linux will be the only option then. No embedded solution by TI Simplelink...

  • So I think you can ask a question under Simplelink topic. I am not sure about their strategy.

Our team is MSP team. MSP432 has been moved to our team from Simplelink. Currently we don't have new road map for Ethernet.

  • Thanks Eason,

So MSP432 is no longer a Simplelink product. Good to know!

I will ask in the Simplelink forum.
