AM2431: Can buffer be removed in boot mode I/F?

Dear Champs,

Could you please let me know why boot mode buffer(SN74AVC8T245RHL) was used in AM243x LP-EVM and GP EVM as below?

Is this for isolation?

Is it possible to remove this buffer in customer's board?

In LP-EVM, there was boot mode buffer was used with boot mode pins.

And also, could you please let me know if there are signals required to be isolated for industrial communication board?

My customer is designing industrial communication board and want to know if there are any signals in AM2431 requiring isolation.

  • Hi,

    The buffer is there to separate the boot mode selection resistors from the GPIOs after the boot mode is latched into the device.  Since the buffer is configured to only be in A->B mode, when the GPIOs are used during normal operation (i.e. BOOTMODE3 is connected to EHRPWM0_A), it prevents the pullup/pulldown from impacting the performance of the pin.

    Regarding signal isolation on industrial communications, this is going to depend on the desired industrial communication protocols for the system.  If you can provide details about which protocols the customer wants to use, we can provide better guidance on necessary isolation.

    Thanks for your immediate response.

    For signal isolation on industrial communications, they are targeting to implement industrial Ethernet protocols like EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, and RAPIEnet. RAPIEnet also require 2 ethernet ports with switch mode and dual mac mode.

    The feedback I got from the experts was that isolation is typically not required for ethernet with magnetics.  Only if the customer is using MII/RGMII cross connect for chip to chip interface would we isolate the interface.
