TM4C123GH6PGE: Memory Upgrade Options

Part Number: TM4C123GH6PGE

My current solution employs a TM4C123GH6PGE microcontroller, but I am trying to either find a similar MCU with more memory or identify an external memory chip with small form factor. I have researched TI's catalog and it appears that I would have to either switch to a BGA (which would introduce unwanted design complexity) or lose 15 GPIO pins (which is not an option) in order to upgrade the MCU memory - this to retain the same family of MCU. Before I conclude that switching to a BGA is my only option I wanted to reach out in this forum to get ideas on what all of my options are.

Is there a similar TGFP chip, not necessarily in the same family and with the same or slightly more pins, which would provide more Flash, SRAM and EEPROM memory on-chip?

Is there an external memory chip which has proven successful when combined with the TM4C123GH6PGE MCU? If so, what is the form factor?

Any information would be very helpful. Please let me know if you require any further information to assist with my query. Thanks!

  • Hello Cameron,

Unfortunately the BGA is the only option in terms of a device type / package change. Honestly this is the first time that this kind of issue came up where the loss of those 15 pins from PGE to PDT is forcing a need for the BGA instead.

If you don't need Arm, maybe C2000 but I am not familiar with the specifics of their portfolio.

We don't really see external memory interfaced with this device as it lacks Quad SPI or a memory bus interface like the TM4C129x's EPI module. I am not sure if there are Single SPI flash devices - usually all NAND Flash is Quad SPI or at least Dual. We don't have any prior instances to refer to for TM4C123x specifically, only for TM4C129x using those advanced peripherals unique to that family.

  • Hi Ralph,

Thank you for your quick response! I will take a look at the C2000 series MCUs. Meanwhile, I am re-evaluating whether I can live without those extra 15 GPIOs. It's unfortunate that there isn't a more direct upgrade, but I may be able to work around it after all.
