AM2432: Building with Makefiles

Hi Team,

My customer has a question about adding source code files. They eventually plan on not using CCS to build, but to use makefiles.

Should they edit the makefile and add the source code file or should they add the source code file in CCS first, and then build using the makefile generated via CCS?

They saw in the makefile that it says that the makefile should not be edited. Furthermore, they also saw on E2E that using the makefile generated from building in CCS is recommended, and that questions regarding any makefiles edited/made by users are not supported. Therefore, is the CCS method the only recommendation and should users not generate/edit their own makefiles? Is there a reason for this?

Please see:

CCS examples and libraries can be built from make files, but only libraries can be built from make files. If your customer needs to modify library builds, then they'll need to modify the library make files.

For CCS projects, you customer can either:

modify the SDK make files (e.g. <SDK>\examples\empty\am243x-evm\r5fss0-0_freertos\ti-arm-clang\makefile) -OR-
modify the generated CCS project make file (e.g. <workspace>/empty_am243x-evm_r5fss0-0_freertos_ti-arm-clang/Debug/makefile

I would recommend directly editing the make files in the SDK. However, questions concerning how to make the modifications won't be supported. Also, issues with the builds resulting from the modifications won't be supported.

Sorry, I'm not sure which posts they're referring to because they didn't link them for me, but I do believe what you mentioned here,

is what they meant. Sorry if my wording was confusing.

Also regarding the two methods regarding makefiles you mentioned here,

So your recommended method is to directly modify the SDK makefile, but questions regarding these modifications and resulting builds are not supported. If they were to use the other method and modify the generated makefile, would these questions regarding these modifications and resulting builds be supported instead?

In general, changes to the build system aren't supported. I've looped in a colleague for further comment in case I'm mistaken on this point.

I see in this makefile it says 'Auto generated makefile - DO NOT MODIFY'. They can modify this right?

Yes, they can modify it.

These are the archive builds (object code only), whereas the CCS projects are linked and result in executable code. Please see https://software-dl.ti.com/codegen/docs/tiarmclang/rel2_0_0_STS/compiler_manual/intro_to_object_modules/index.html

Hi Mari,

One more comment on this, we prefer the customer copy existing make files and build on top of the copied files, rather than editing existing files. This way, the original builds are retained.

Hi Mari,

Adding few points and summarizing the discussion for better understanding -

1. Makefile intra support

Libraries - only makefile builds are supported

Examples - makefile and CCS builds are supported

2. Modifying makefiles is supported. We have filed bug on SDK to remove disclaimer([MCUSDK-3814] Remove "Do not modify" from makefiles and other customer delivered files - Texas Instruments JIRA (ti.com)).

3. Support from TI on makefile modification

As plenty of information and help about makefiles is available on public web (say Stackoverflow), our suggestion is to use it before contacting TI.

We should be able to support in case information required is very TI specific.
