AM2431: Octal SPI using a PSRAM device and wanting to use Execute in Place (XIP)

I am considering using an Octal SPI memory PSRAM device like the AP Memory APS6408L-3OBMX-BA

I wanted to be able to run Execute in Place (XIP) with the RAM device.

I know the AM2431 supports XIP on the Octal SPI interface, but since I am using a PSRAM device this is not specifically stated that it would support it and there are no specific mention in the PSRAM supporting XIP. What I am wondering is if TI has ever tried this or has any comments on this topology

Hi Iance,

The PSRAM should use the GPMC interface. I know we do not have GPMC driver right now, but it is coming in next MCU+ SDK release (08.03.00 by end of May). It should support PSRAM and XIP will be supported by default.

We did tested the XIP from PSRAM via GPMC on AM243x internally. It works fine

Thank you for reviewing this and suggesting to use the GPMC. However, could you also state if you have tested XIP for the Octal SPI since I do not plan to use the GPMC for this application.

Perhaps you can first state if XIP using a Nor Flash on Octal SPI is qualified?
Then you can let me know if I could use a PSRAM Octal SPI part and run that in XIP mode after the PSRAM is loaded with code?

Hi Iance,

First of all, the XIP on NOR flash over OSPI interface has been verified on AM243x EVM using S28HS512TGABHM010

I looked through the datasheet of the APS6408L-3OBMX-BA. Its usage is like the OSPI flash, so I think it should support XIP also. The process should be similar to the XIP over OSPI for S28HS512TGABHM010.
