LP-AM243: Boards not working after transport in airfare

Part Number: LP-AM243

Hi,

Is it safe to transport your LP-AM243 Launchpads in luggage on airplanes? I have had multiple occurrences where my boards stopped working after airfare travel

The first trip, 17hrs of flight caused my original Launchpad to stop working, LD9 was illuminated so I bought extra I thought I had done something

On this return trip home though ALL of the boards are not working, even the unopened ones. All are showing the LD9 power failure error what is causing this? Did I do something wrong?

  • Hi,

I highly doubt the airplane/flight did anything to the boards to make them stop working.

LD9 being lit indicates the USB Type C port has not successfully negotiated a 5V 3A power configuration.  The most common cause of this is that the power supply or source the USB Type C port is connected to is not rated for 5V 3A or is having trouble negotiating it.

Can you let me know what your power source is for the LaunchPads so we can confirm that it meets the 5V 3A requirement?

    Thanks,
    Mike

  • For (2) of the units this was uncovered from Brazilian wall power using a USB adapter bought from Amazon while in Brazil (ref).

For the remaining (5) units this occurred from the powerstrip USB ports I typically use for development when back to work in the US (ref)

  • Hi Justin,

Both of the products you linked will not successfully provide power to the LP-AM243.  USB Type C requires negotiation between both ends of the USB C cable connection.  If you connect to a USB A port (even one that can provide sufficient volts/amps), that negotiation will not happen, and the USB Type C port on the LaunchPad will only pull 5V 0.5A, which is insufficient power.  You should look for a power supply that is rated for at least 5V 3A and says "USB Type C" and "Power Delivery" on it to be able to ensure providing sufficient power to the LaunchPad.

    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Oh my gosh, this works! Thank you Mike

... and  a little embarrassing, I sincerely share my thanks things are resolved now

    Thanks!

    - Justin

  • I would recommend an explicit warning in this document -

'WARNING: This unit will display LD9 and not function with less than 5V/3A"

In discussion with my team this was a surprise to them as well!

  • Hi Justin,

No worries, I'm glad we were able to easily resolve the issue!

We do have some instructions on the power supply in the LP-AM243 User's Guide, section 3.1 that discusses the power supply requirements, including that USB PD negotiated 5V 3A is required, and that LD9 being lit indicates that the 5V input on the USB Type C is not sufficient to meet the boards needs.  However, we do know the power requirements for this LaunchPad are significantly higher than traditional LaunchPads, which is causing confusion with customers who are used to any USB power source being sufficient to completely power their LaunchPad.  So we do appreciate the feedback that this requirement is not sufficiently highlighted in the tool documentation.

I'm going to close this thread, but feel free to re-open or start a new thread if you have any more questions or concerns.

    Thanks,
    Mike
