AM2431: Questions on the industrial communication subsystem for the AM64x and AM243x family

Part Number: AM2431

As a company specialized in designing field devices to be used in intralogistics we are currently evaluating the use of processors of the AM64x and AM243x family equipped with and industrial communication subsystem (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, ...). Being unable to find detailed information about this online I was referred to this support forum by the TI technical support staff:

  1. Which features (detailed list) of the Profinet and Ethernet/IP standard are being supported by the respective protocol stacks?
  2. Does the Profinet stack suppport the most recent Profinet Specification (2.42)?
  3. How and in which intervals are the protocol stacks being updated? Until which points does TI guarantee the supply of updates of the protocol stacks?
  4. Does the price of a processor of the AM64x and AM243x families cover all licencing fees for the industrial protocol stacks? If so, does this also apply to future updates of the stacks? What are the costs for technical support for the protocol stacks?
  • Hi Simon,

    See responses below.

1: Which features (detailed list) of the Profinet and Ethernet/IP standard are being supported by the respective protocol stacks?

MH> The MCU+ SDK contains datasheets for each of the protocols.  They can be found in the Industrial Comms Toolkit documentation folder at https://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/content/mcu_plus_sdk_am243x_08_02_00_31/docs/api_guide_am243x/INDUSTRIAL_COMMS_TI_STACK.html

    2. Does the Profinet stack support the most recent Profinet Specification (2.42)?

MH> TI is working toward certification of PN and it will be certified to 2.42.

    3. How and in which intervals are the protocol stacks being updated? Until which points does TI guarantee the supply of updates of the protocol stacks?

MH> There are no specific update intervals.  Protocol stacks will be updated as new specifications are released and included in the MCU+ SDK.

    4. Does the price of a processor of the AM64x and AM243x families cover all licensing fees for the industrial protocol stacks? If so, does this also apply to future updates of the stacks? What are the costs for technical support for the protocol stacks

MH> Protocol licensing cost is included in the price of the AM64x or AM243x devices that enable the protocols which is designated by orderable part numbers. Protocols stacks are included in the MCU+ SDK and updates will also be made available in the MCU SDK as they are released.  Protocols can be evaluated on AM64x/243x EVMs and AM243 Launchpads via the MCU+ SDK but will only run on customer hardware with devices that have the protocols enabled. Technical support for the protocols is provided by TI at no additional charge.

    Regards,

    Mike
