RM57L843: Why add another MCU for debug in Launchboard designs?

Part Number: RM57L843

Guys, I'm an MCU newbie.

From my limited understanding, connecting a JTAG connector & UART interface to the MCU should be sufficient enough to do debugging tasks.

What's the purpose of adding another MCU to do XDS110 debugging feature in the launchboard?

Thank you.

  • Hi RSue,

Most Hercules development and evaluation boards have a debugger on board.

    1. The LaunchPads (TMS570Lx, and RM4x, and RM5x) use a TM4C129 microcontroller which runs run XDS110 emulation

    2. The HDKs use the FTDI FT2322 in combination with a Xilinx XC2C32A CPLD for XDS100V2 emulation

This provides an easy to use development and debug experience with just a single USB connection.
