Our customer wants to use AM273x with a mmWave radar sensor such as AWR2243 in battery-powered equipment and wants to reduce average power consumption as much as possible.

How to transition the entire AM273x device to low power mode?

Does the SDK for AM273x support transitioning the entire device to low power mode?

What is the power consumption in low power mode?

Hi Daisuke,

AM273x SoC has two Power Domains:

1. Always-on power domain

2. DSP power domain

DSP Power Domain can be completely switched OFF. Please see section 5.4 Power Domains in the TRM (SPRUIU0A – JANUARY 2022 – REVISED OCTOBER 2022).

Always ON Power domain supplies power to entire device except DSP. For the unused modules supplied in this power domain can be clock gated and CPUs could be put in WFI state to reduce the power.

You can use the https://www.ti.com/lit/an/sprad10/sprad10.pdf to see the power consumed for the usecase need.

I will check with SDK team on SW support for the same.

Could you tell me the sequence to transition in gated clock or WFI state each of the unused modules to reduce the power?

Hi Daisuke,

RCM module registers facilitates clock gating. Please look at the Device Configuration chapter. Figure 5.1. Each of the TOP_RCM, RCSS_RCM, MSS_RCM and DSS_RCM have registers to disable peripheral clocks. You can search with *_CLK_GATE. All unused peripherals/modules clocks can be gated by writing 'b111' to these registers.

Hi Shiv-san,

Low power modes are described in the section for each peripheral on the TRM, but it seems that each peripheral supports the different low power modes.

"10.1.1.4.2.2 Device-Level Power Down" in the GIO section describes placing the entire device in low power mode by disabling the clock.

Each section of I2C, SCI and SPI describes that each module can be completely inactive by turning off the clock during global low power mode.

Are these low power modes meant to be clock gated by the "*_CLK_GATE" register?

Hi Daisuke,

Those are the IP level clock gating knobs. We recommend to use the RCM level CLK gate knobs to clock gate the peripherals wherever available.

On SW support in SDK currently these are not supported and scheduled for future releases.
