AM2634: Connection of FPGA and separate external RAM on AM2634

Part Number: AM2634

We plan to connect external FPGA and separate external RAM on AM2634 using General-Purpose Memory Controller available on the device that controls the bus for external memory devices. Is there a possibility of this approach on the same bus using chip select since there is only one General Purpose Memory Controller on the AM2634 device?

In the ” AM263x SitaraTM Microcontrollers Texas Instruments Families of Products Technical Reference Manual ” (document spruj17c.pdf)  can be found the following description:

Only One instance of the General-Purpose Memory Controller (GPMC) module is on am2634

AM2634 support 8- or 16-bit-wide data path to external memory devices.

AM2634 support up to 4 independent chip-select regions of programmable size and programmable base addresses on 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, or 128MB boundary in a total address space of 128MB.

  • Hi Neven,

it shouldn't be an issue if the FPGA and RAM are connected to their own chip select signals, even if there is just a single GPMC instance on the device. The number of devices you can connect is dependent on the number of chip select signals you have available in the controller rather than the number of controllers the devices has.

You can see an examples of connections in the TRM in section 13.3.1.2.1 GPMC Modes that hopefully helps clear things up as well

Please let me know if you have any more questions

    Best,

    Daniel
