All,

I'm working to count the number of error frames in the CAN communication. Can you please help me to understand the REC and TEC of ERCC?

According to TRM, REC is only 7 bits and go up to 127 and TEC is 8 bit and go up to 255.

1. Is REC or TEC counter incremented by 1 for every error frame?

2. What would happen if counter reached the limit?

3. Software reset is possible for this register.

Yes, If an error frame is received on CAN reception then REC will get incremented by one and if error is received on CAN transmission then TEC will get incremented by one.

After reaching to max value it won't roll out to zero and it stays on that max value till proper communication gets happening, if frames or receiving or transmitting successfully then again value will get decrement by one for each frame.

We can't directly write into this register to make it as zero as this register is read only. But a reset will cause this register to it's initial value i.e. all zeros.

Based on you answers, once an error counter reaching the max value, the number of error count will be lost after that (Assumes no proper communication gets happening)

Is there any way to count the exact number of (transmitting/ receiving) error?

Yes, you are right.

No, there is no other way to count exact number of errors.
