Battery protection and Lipo charger IC

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ294534, BQ2945

Hello there. Very recently, this project caught my eyes:

 https://www.pcbway.com/project/shareproject/DIY_Solar_Bottle_Lamp_Upgraded_Version_e2879ef8.html

I really want to give a try. That's why I am looking for suggestions. I can see that there is a Lipo charger and battery protection part in the whole circuit. However, I can't read the IC names.  Can anyone suggest a Lipo charger IC and a battery protection IC manufactured by Texas instruments which I can use for such projects? Is the BQ294534 suitable for such application?

  • Hi Zain,

TI has rich charger portfolio that can do the LiPo battery charging. Depending on the charging profile required by the battery specification, you can refer to the selection guide for the chargers to find the best matching charger. https://www.ti.com/power-management/battery-management/charger-ics/products.html. Our protection expert will provide the comment on BQ294534.

  • Hi Zain,

The BQ2945 protector is for 2-3 series cell battery applications but from what I can see this is a single cell application which may be better served by the BQ297xx or the BQ298x protector family. Beyond that, the use of the protection IC will heavily depend on the thresholds/features needed in the application.

In the case of the BQ2945 family of protectors, it will only provide over-voltage protection (secondary protection) and the orderable PN will depend on the OVP threshold requirement. While the BQ297xx and BQ298x protector families offer a fully featured protector with OVP, UVP, OCD, OCC and other integrated features (primary protection).
