TMS570LC4357: Are there existing performance benchmarks between tiarmclang and armcl compilers? And what is the future of armcl support?

Hi,

My team currently uses armcl version v20.2.4.LTS for our TMS570LC4357 processor and are considering migrating to tiarmclang.

We have two questions, however:

Are there any existing performance benchmarks performed by TI between tiarmclang and armcl? I see that there are existing benchmarks between tiarmclang releases. Additionally, do you have any advice on how to benchmark our own code on both compilers?
What is the future of the armcl compiler? A new version has not been released in a year whereas several tiarmclang LTS and STS versions have been released in the meanwhile. The answer to this question seems to indicate TI is winding down armcl support. There is also a long list of known issues with the compiler that haven't been addressed in the past few versions

Hi Daniel,

I don't have any benchmarks results but for Hercules microcontrollers like TMS570LC4357, we don't recommend using tiarmclang, we recommend only armcl because,

No all the macros, Intrinsics, and Pragma used in HalCoGen (GUI based configuration tool used to generate the driver level code) code and SDL (SafeTI Diagnostic Library) are fully supported by TI ARM Clang compiler. To use Clang, the user has to modify those code manually.

Hi Jagadish,

Thank you for the fast response.

I'm not worried about HalCoGen code as we have already followed TI's armcl to tiarmclang porting guide and resolved all issues. We just used HalCoGen as a starting point of our project and aren't using it to generate code anymore.

We don't use the SafeTi Diagnostics library, however, we do plan to safety certify our code via TI's SafeTi CQKIT . I am unfamiliar with the process, but will we run into any issues using tiarmclang there (I'm unsure if "SafeTi Diagnostics" code is used there)?

Hi Daniel,

We recommend using TIARMCLANG for Hercules devices. As Jagadish said, not all the macros, Intrinsics, and Pragma used in HalCoGen code, SDL, CSP (Functional Safety Compliance Support Package) are fully supported by TI ARM Clang compiler.

Application of the TI CQKIT requires generating coverage data in order to verify that all portions of the compiler used for compiling your application code (may contains SDL, HAL code, etc) are also exercised by validation testing.

Please check with the CQKIT experts in compiler team if ARMCLANG CQKIT supports Hercules devices.
