TMDS243EVM: ENET ICSSG : Both Industrial Communication and LWIP Communication on PHY J21

Hi Community,

my motivation is to use the two ICSSG port of the AM243xEVM board as follows:

Port A of the ICSSG PHY for Industrial communication e.g. Profinet using the Industrial com stack
Port B of the ICSSG PHY as a TCP Client using the LWIP stack.

Both of the application shall run on the same R5FSS core.

Is this possible? Can I have some links to relevant sources where I could find this Info?

Also, in what mode shall the EMAC be configured Switch or Dual MAC mode?

Hi Shobit,

Thanks for your query. It is not possible to use Industrial comms(ICSS EMAC driver based) with TCP client on ICSSG( Enet LLD based) together on a single ICSS instance. Also on evm boards only ICSSG1 is mapped with the ethernet PHYs. So Instead we recommend using CPSW based TCP client solution for these scenario along with Industrial comms.

Also if you could please mention what is the use case here?

Hi Nilabh, thanks for your prompt reply.

The use case is proof of concept for a hobby/ DIY project that could communicate using both TCP and Industrial Comm protocols. I went through the SDK examples and saw that LWIP is also supported on the ICSSG, so thought is the two protocols can be somehow made to run using one PHY.

I thought it would be possible to use both protocols on one PHY.

Yes correct, though if you have a custom board you can implement it. On EVM alternative is to use CPSW port.

Hi again,

I rechecked the AM64x/AM243x GP EVM User's Guide (Rev. D) (ti.com) and would like to confirm my question was not missunderstood in any form.

So basically is this possible on AM243x boards?

I have read this thread " Getting Started with PROFINET RT " and know that Profinet and TCP Client based on CPSW is possible. Kindly Advise.

Hi Shobhith,

I agree the nomencleture in the user guide is bit confusing with ICSSG1 and ICSSG2 phy. Please note that both the Phys are connected to one instance of ICSSG which is ICSSG1, so we cannot have both Profinet and TCP client run on same ICSSG as stated above. This is evident from pin name as both phys are connected to same PRG1_RGMII1...

Is this a feature only restricted to the EVM board or for example the LP board also has the same layout?

Yeah LP board also has the same layout. Only iCSS1 is mapped to two phy
