TM4C1233H6PGE: Programming Tool and Connector for the TM4C1233H6PGE

Part Number: TM4C1233H6PGE
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EK-TM4C123GXL, SEGGER, , EK-TM4C1294XL

I am interested in using the TM4C1233H6PGE in a custom design.  The evaluation board (EK-TM4C123GXL) has a USB interface with a second microprocessor for the In Circuit Debug Interface.  It has no external debug interface.  This second microcontroller is not a viable solution for my design.  What is the programmer/debug tool can I buy and what is the programming interface connector that I can build into the design so that I will be able to program my custom design with Code Composer Studio or Segger Jlink tools?  Is there a design reference or evaluation board that I can look at with a programming interface I can use in my design?

Microchip has the Pickit 3, does TI have a tool similar to that?

  • Hi Chris,

There are two USB ports on EK-TM4C123GXL LaunchPad. The one on the top is the USB Debug Port. The one on the left is the USB Device Port. Your understanding is correct that the second MCU acts as a ICDI Debug Probe. This is to provide customers a ready to use LaunchPad without an external JTAG Debug Probe. You can certainly add a JTAG connector to your custom board. With a JTAG connector, you have various options of debug probes to choose from that are supported by CCS. Segger Jlink is supported by CCS and there are lower cost options such as XDS110 and XDS200 debug probes.

Please refer to this app note for debugging TM4C MCU over JTAG interface. https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/spma075

This EK-TM4C1294XL LaunchPad has both the onboard ICDI as well as a JTAG connector that users can use to connect with an external debug probe.  The user's guide has the schematic. https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/spmu365
