Dear TI experts:

I need one RGMII for 1G Ethernet with 1588 and one or two RMII for 100M Ethernet switch.

Only R5F side has RMII support so I will use CPSW3G0 ethernet switch for RMII.

The PRU-ICSSG can support 1G RGMII so I want to allocation the 1G Ethernet here.

Pls help me confirm whether this solution is the best choice？

And I am not sure the different between CPSW3G0 and PRU-ICSSG,

I wish the 1G Ethernet port with the highest performance, so the CPSW3G0 and PRU-ICSSG which one is the best choice?

Hi Aiden-kai.chen,

Can you explain a bit more about your end use case? Do you have any TCP/IP or UDP or other L-4 stack requirements?

IEEE 1588 defined PTP is supported on both CPSW and ICSSG.
Both CPSW3G and PRU-ICSSG support 1G RGMII.
LwIP stack for L-4 features are supported on both CPSW and ICSS
CPSW3G supports 100M RMII so no other option to use the ICSS this side.
Both the CPSW and PRU-ICSSG serve different purposes. I recommend using PRU-ICSSG to be used for industrial applications and protocols such as EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, HSR-PRP, IO.Link etc. CPSW on the other hand is intended to be used for your general networking use cases. Hi Shaunak,

We will use UDP for application. The PRU can parallel processing with main domain. If we just use the PRU for ethernet communication, is it meaning

the PRU has lower latency and higher performance?

ICSSG is a software based switch which programs PRU, so there will be some overhead.

But based on the requirements shared in the original post, this seems to be the way:

1. CPSW - For 100M RMII Ethernet Switch, this cannot be supported by PRU-ICSSG

2. ICSSG - Ethernet 1588 PTP

Thanks for your information. I want to confirm that whether the ICSSG is a switch.

One PRU with a ICSSG switch for two RGMII/MII port?

Hi Aiden-kai-chen,

A bit unclear about the question.

Based on the original requirement you shared in the question, You can use CPSW for 100M ethernet switch. CPSW will use 1 RMII and ICSSG will use 1 RGMII and you can get Ethernet 1588 over it.

ICSSG is a software switch which will Program the PRU. PRU-ICSSG is primarily used for real-time processing tasks like industrial communication protocols. We also have support for PTP over ICSSG.

Here since you mentioned you need RMII for 100M ethernet switch, that can be achieved with CPSW. For Ethernet 1588, the ICSSG supports it and can be used. CPSW is a hardware switch primarily used for general networking functionalities, switching etc.
