AM2732: Radar FFT benchmark with AFE5401

Genius 3186 points
Part Number: AM2732
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR2243,

Hi

My customer is considering using AM273x for mmWave(about 20GHz) data processing.

May I have question about AM273x acceralation spec?

Q1 :

Is there any benchmark FFT using Hardware Accelerator 2.0?

Q2 :

Is there any benchmark compared if FFT using in C66x DSP, HWA2.0, or ARM cortex-R5F?

Q3 :

I think EVM is recive mmWave Raw data through LVDS or CSI, could we recive through SPI interface?

Q4 :

If use AFE5401 as RX AFE, Is there any good way to send to AM273x?

Thanks,

GR

  • Hi GR,

Please find my responses to your questions below:

    1. Is there any benchmark FFT using Hardware Accelerator 2.0?
      1. Please find the attached image.

    2. Is there any benchmark compared if FFT using in C66x DSP, HWA2.0, or ARM cortex-R5F?
      1. We do not have a 3-way benchmark comparison. However, we have benchmarked the computation of each of these cores independently. For HWA, you can refer the above image. For the c66x DSP, you can refer to the docs in the DSP LIB which has optimized FFT implementations. This can be obtained in the latest mmWave MCU plus SDK.
    3. I think EVM is receive mmWave Raw data through LVDS or CSI, could we receive through SPI interface?
      1. Please find the data sheet that specifices all available data interfaces on the AWR2243.

    4. If use AFE5401 as RX AFE, Is there any good way to send to AM273x?
      1. I will reassign to the right team to comment on this if you have no further questions with 1-3.

  • Hi Kaushik,

    Thanks for your information,

Is there any benchmark FFT using Hardware Accelerator 2.0?
    1. Please find the attached image.

Where could we find this table? in Technical Reference Manual?

I think AM2732 DSP system operate in 450MHz but I think your picture is in 300MHz.

    I checked mmWave MCU+SDK.

Do you mean there is example of FFT on C66x DSP?

Is there any test report ( As how many CPU cycle need on this demo's FFT )?

Do I have to move the demo on the EVM and measure it?

    --

And Is there any information FFT on R5F?

If use AFE5401 as RX AFE, Is there any good way to send to AM273x?
    1. I will reassign to the right team to comment on this if you have no further questions with 1-3.

Thank you, but I have some question as above.

    Best regards,

    GR

  • Hi GR,

    Please find my responses below:

    1. It can be found in the TRM Section 6.4.5.1.5 Core Computational Unit – FFT Quantization and Speed Performance. You are also right; the HWA clock speed is 400MHz and not 300MHz or 450 MHz as shown in the diagram on the AM273x device. The screenshot was for the HWA 2.0 that was adapted in another device and the clock was different but as far as the cycles are concerned, it would take the same in both cases. Apologize for any confusion.
    2. Please refer to the following link which gives a report of the c66x DSP library functions.
      Test Report - DSPLIB 3.4.0.0 C66x
To avoid further confusion, the DSP Lib is provided as part of the mmWave MCU Plus SDK package (Link Here), which also consists of a demo with am273x + AWR2243.
There are no explicit numbers regarding the c66x based FFT in the demo as they are all done in the HWA and can be easily calculated based on it paramset's programming by referring to 1.
With respect to the R5f, there are currently no FFT related numbers available as there was no intended use case of running algorithms like FFT on the R5f.
    3. No further questions seen here.
    4. Need to re-assign to the right expert to comment further if 1 and 2 are clear.

    Kaushik

  • Hi Kaushik,

    Thanks for your information.

    I understand about FFT.

Need to re-assign to the right expert to comment further if 1 and 2 are clear.

May I have advice from right exparts?

    Best regards,
