TMDSCNCD263P: ADCs Don't Work Without PMIC Configured In SYSCONFIG

Part Number: TMDSCNCD263P
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SYSCONFIG

Tool/software:

This is a "heads-up" for other engineers rather than an appeal for a solution.

Our custom software for TMDSCNCD263P was configured from scratch using SYSCONFIG with only the peripherals we needed at the time. However we spent a considerable number of hours trying to understand why the ADC results in our software were always zero whereas the TI ADC examples worked just fine on the same hardware.

The answer was because the PMIC supplies the ADC reference VCC_1V8_LDO4 and by default the PMIC does not have LDO4 switched on. Our oversight was that our custom software did not (yet) include the SYSCONFIG configuration for the PMIC that you find in the example TI projects.

In our defence, the controlCARD manual:

- Makes no mention of the PMIC in section "2.11.13 ADC and DAC".

- Claims incorrectly that a reference IC (REF3318AIDBZT) is used. There's no such IC on the TMDSCNCD263P.

- The ADC example README.html do not mention the ADC reference is the PMIC.

So the fix is to either configure the PMIC in SYSCONFIG (which I infer enables LDO4) or supply 3V3 to pin 45 of the HSEC connector.

To TI, Please improve the manual along these lines:

And another thing. These resistors are populated despite the DNI comment:
