DP83822H: dp83822 connection failure with PC when cable shortened

Part Number: DP83822H
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869,

Tool/software:

Hi TI

We are using dp83822 in our project, it is connected to pc ethernet port by a three meter long cable and it works fine. But when we shorten the calble to 30cm, the connection failed, please check the attached video, we can see that the local connection is always switching beteen linked and unlinked.

We read out some phy registers as below

test rphyall
----> argc:2
----> argv test
----> argv rphyall
PHY 0x0170: = 0x1102
PHY 0x0171: = 0x0108
PHY 0x0173: = 0x6a00
PHY 0x0177: = 0x0a41
PHY 0x0180: = 0x3100
PHY 0x0181: = 0x7849
PHY 0x0182: = 0x2000
PHY 0x0183: = 0xa240
PHY 0x0184: = 0x01e1
PHY 0x0185: = 0xcde1
PHY 0x0186: = 0x000f
PHY 0x0187: = 0x2001
PHY 0x0188: = 0xe008
PHY 0x0189: = 0x0020
PHY 0x018a: = 0x0100

Please alse check our schematic. Looking forward to you reply. Thanks.

  • Hi Chen,

    Thank you for sharing the information.

    If possible, may I ask how is the magnetic connected to the RJ45 ports?

    If possible, may I ask how does DP83869 connected to PC? Does it have have adaptor board between the PC and DP83869PHY?

  • Hi Hillman,

    DP83869?It should be dp83822H.

    Customer's is that is that PHY will relink after the cable was replaced, 3m-->30cm. The 30cm cable is 26AWG CATE5e and tried three.

    I thought you could provide some suggestions on cable analysis.

    1.Which different parameters of the cable will lead to different results?

    2. Which registers can indicate the reason for PHY relink?

  • Hi Guohai,

    Sorry for the confusion. I meant DP83822.

    If possible could you provide a register dump between 0x0000 to 0x001F for both long cable and short cable?

    • We would like to focus on register 0x0001 for link up status indication. Please read the register 0x0001 multiple time.

    If possible, could customer run a compliance test with long cable and short cable on the scope?

  • Hello HillMan and Guohai

    Sorry for late reply.

    We found that it was a hardware issue. For the board under test, resistor R352, R353, R355 and R354 were not actually placed on the PCB. But after we added those resistors on the pcb, the network works fine now.

    So please close this thread, thanks for your support.

  • Hi Cheng,

    Glad that issue is resolve.
