AM2431: Is SIL2 certification valid in the case of even only R5F core is used without Safety Island ?

Part Number: AM2431

Tool/software:

Hi,

As it seems that the following thread was locked, let me ask the same question here.

https://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/arm-based-microcontrollers-group/arm-based-microcontrollers/f/arm-based-microcontrollers-forum/1438003/am2431-sil2-in-the-use-case-of-only-r5f-is-used

AM243x got SIL2 certification.
https://www.ti.com/jp/lit/pdf/sffs846

Is that assumed to use some of diagnostic function in the safety island (MCU Island) ?
Or it doesn’t depend on the use of the features in the safety island ?

For example, is SIL2 certification valid in the case of even only R5F core is used without Safety Island ?

The customer has to explain the above for getting the certification of their system with AM2431.

Please provide your comment. It would be appreciated if we can receive it as soon as possible.

Thanks and regards,
Hideaki

  • Hello Hideaki-san,

Is that assumed to use some of diagnostic function in the safety island (MCU Island) ?
Or it doesn’t depend on the use of the features in the safety island ?

Safety Island is just an additional feature available on AM243x. It is not necessary to use the safety island feature to achieve SIL2 safety level.

For example, is SIL2 certification valid in the case of even only R5F core is used without Safety Island ?

Yes, it should be possible. If they implement the necessary safety diagnostics from the safety manual, their system should be able to achieve SIL2 safety level even without utilising the MCU core.

  • Hi Nihar,

Thank you so much for your answer. That’s really helpful. Let me confirm a little more.

Yes, it should be possible. If they implement the necessary safety diagnostics from the safety manual, their system should be able to achieve SIL2 safety level even without utilising the MCU core.

All POK modules which monitor the voltage levels on each power rail are in MCU domain.

Is SIL2 certification which TI obtained valid in the case of even not using these POK modules ?

    Thanks and regards,

  • Hi Nihar,

Could I receive any response to my inquiry above ?

    Thanks and regards,
