Differences bewtween RM4 and TMS570 MCUs

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS570LS20216

Hi, i was looking at Hercules MCUs but i could not find any great difference between RM4 family and TMS570. The later is qualified for automotive applications.. but i belive that is not enough difference to create two distinct families. There are also differente peripherals, but thats not enought either as thet got differencie within the families. Any comment about that? I will probably go for TMS570 due to the automotive rating, but i want to make sure the real difference.

Also an extra question. I was looking at TMS570 USB stick and i noticed that there is a pad for placing a connector for the J-tag. Is that for real? Can i debug an external device with the kit? If yes, is there any special requirement as specific jumper setting to accomplish this task?

Thank you!

I'm not sure what comment you are looking for.  The feature sets of the RM4 and TMS570 members of the Hercules MCUs can be stacked up against each other with the following selection tool.

Beyond that, you are entitled to your opinion about the validity of having different part numbers.

Which kit are you referencing?  The TMS570 USB stick which features the TMS570LS20216, the schematics show a connector, J1, for JTAG purposes.  However, there is no logic on the board that removes the onboard TMS570 device out of the JTAG scan path to use this connector for a TMS570 on your own target board.  Therefore, you will not be able to debug an external device with the kit.

  • Thank you for your answers Brandon. I was not looking for any special comment. Just wanted to know if i was missing something. I use TI mcus for a while and ussually the same core got the same initials on the name. And when there is a huge difference the name is changed. As one example is the MSP430 with CC430. One got a RF tranceiver, and the other  no. That is something considerably. But when there is no such difference the name keeps the same. All Cortex-M3 are LM3, all 32 bits C2000 are TMS320. So RM4 to TMS570 is a quitte difference. But thats ok. If there is no such difference, thats all the information i was looking for.

    Thank yoU!
