MSPM0G1105: How to connect the XDS110

Genius 3215 points

Part Number: MSPM0G1105
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LP-MSPM0G3507

Tool/software:

Hi All,

1)
Is the connection between the XDS110 and the microcontroller correct?

Microcontroller           XDS110 (CTI20)
SWDIO (34-pin) ⇔ SWDIO/TMS (1-pin)
SWCLK (35-pin) ⇔ SWCLK/TCK (11-pin)
VDD (6-pin) ⇒ VTREF (5-pin)?
NRST (4-pin) ⇔ nRESET (15-pin)?
VSS (7-pin) ⇒ GND (10, 12-pin)

2)
I do not want to use the probe's power supply function, but instead want to supply power to the board from a switching power supply or similar
to write to the microcontroller's Flash.
Should the microcontroller's VDD pin be connected to the XDS110's VTREF pin?

※Explanation
The purpose is to transmit the microcontroller's power supply voltage to the XDS110.
The XDS110's IO pin voltage is considered to be variable by a level shifter IC, etc.,
using the Voltage Translation function. Target
Is it acceptable to supply 3.3V from the board to the XDS110's VTREF pin?
I was unable to find the specifications for the VTREF pin.

3)
The NRST pin is also connected to an open-drain output reset IC on the board.
Is the XDS110's output open-drain?

4)
Regarding the processing of SWDIO (pin 34) and SWCLK (pin 35)
Only the connector is connected, and it remains open under normal conditions.
Are pull-up or pull-down resistors required on the board?
https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/SLAU846  P.2254

Since the IC has internal pull-up and pull-down resistors, is it acceptable to leave the board open?

5)
The link to the Japanese version of the MSPM0G1105 datasheet is broken.
How can I obtain it?

Best Regards,

Ito

  • Hi Ito,

Is the connection between the XDS110 and the microcontroller correct?

Below thread I share what should be connected for XDS110 probe:E2E Thread

I do not want to use the probe's power supply function, but instead want to supply power to the board from a switching power supply or similar
to write to the microcontroller's Flash.
Should the microcontroller's VDD pin be connected to the XDS110's VTREF pin?

That is correct, VTREF is used to monitor VDD, it doesn't power the board directly. You must have other power source to power the MCU.

Is it acceptable to supply 3.3V from the board to the XDS110's VTREF pin?

    Yes it is.

The NRST pin is also connected to an open-drain output reset IC on the board.
    Is the XDS110's output open-drain?

I do not find any documents have related information. Ideally the answer is yes, but I recommend custoemr test it and double check.

Since the IC has internal pull-up and pull-down resistors, is it acceptable to leave the board open?

Yes, that will be okay. We enable the same connection in LP-MSPM0G3507.

The link to the Japanese version of the MSPM0G1105 datasheet is broken.
    How can I obtain it?

I find below link is accessible:

Please let me know if you have further question.

  • Hi Sal,

    Thank you for your help.

Below thread I share what should be connected for XDS110 probe:E2E Thread

    I can't find the thread.

    [Additional questions]

I am looking for a pin header that fits the CTI-20 cable.
The pin pitch was listed in the documentation.

I searched Digikey for a pin pitch of .050 by .100 inch and found the following three pin headers.

    ・Samtec: ZML-120-02-L-D
    ・Sullins: SBH41-NBPB-D10-ST-BK
    ・Hirose: HIF6A-20PA-1.27DSA(71)

The pin length, thickness, and resin shape of pin headers vary by manufacturer.
When mating connectors from different manufacturers,
I believe it is necessary to confirm the following items.

    • Pin pitch: .050 by .100 inch
    • Compatible pin thickness: ? (0.18 SQ inch?)
    • Compatible pin length: ?
    • Pin socket shape: ?
    • Reverse insertion prevention resin length: ?

  • Hi Ito,

Sorry for the expired link, see below picture for your reference:

I find nothing in the XDS110 User Guide, I'll check its part number of the connector and hopefully could update feedback to you next week.

I am OOO in next few days.

  • Hi Sal,

    Thank you for your reply.

I find nothing in the XDS110 User Guide, I'll check its part number of the connector and hopefully could update feedback to you next week.

We are looking forward to this action next week.

    Best Regards,
