Hi Team,

We are planning to design a option board (60mm x 60mm size) which is capable of signal processing using motor vibration sensor data from industrial field. This optional module will be connected to main processor board through UART. Please suggest a suitable controller solution, The controller should have below mentioned features. Currently we chosen MSP432E401Y and let us know is there any better options we have.

1) M4 or M7 core with DSP capability

2) Should support RTOS

3) Should support external SRAM and NAND flash

4) Should have USB and ethernet interface

5) Number of pins should be less than 200 (Space constrains are there in board)

Hi Jithesh,

The MSP432E is a good option meeting all the requirements you mention above. Another great option would be https://www.ti.com/product/TM4C1294NCPDT which can support all of the same requirements. This MCU is the same silicon as MSP432E401Y. The main difference is that MSP432E401Y is based on TI SimpleLink SDK while TM4C1294NCPDT is based on the TivaWare SDK. The TM4C129 family of MCUs have more part numbers to choose among memory sizes and peripheral features. Please use the TM4C Microcontrollers Product Selection Guide to select the part number that is best suited for your requirements.

1) Hi Charles, Thanks for the information, need to clarify one more thing, In the datasheet of MSP432E, they mentioned integrated ethernet phy, so external ethernet phy chip is not required? please clarify

2) can we connect flash and SDRAM / SRAM at a time? what is the maximum memory we can interface in both SRAM and flash memory, please share if any reference design is there.

3) One more thing i need to know. whether the heat sink is needed or not ?

That is correct. You can save BOM cost and this is one of the key differentiators for this device.

The EPI module can support multiple chip selects. Refer to this reference design based on TM4C129 MCU which is the same silicon as MSP432E. https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDM-TM4C129SDRAMNVM

Hi Charles, Thank you very much for this information. Just please share the details and buying link of jtag debugger for MSP432E. Also other than JTAG is there any debug option we have ? like debug UART

Hi,

I will suggest you first acquire a development board for evaluation https://www.ti.com/tool/MSP-EXP432E401Y. This board has an integrated XDS110 Debug Probe. There is no need of an external debug probe. Once you build your own custom board, you can purchase either the XDS110 or XDS200 Debug Probe to interface with the JTAG port on your board. These two are popular options.

Absolutely you can use TM4C129NCPDT. The TM4C129NCPDT is the same silicon as MSP432E401Y. The only difference is that the TM4C129 family of MCU is based on the TivaWare SDK while the MSP432E401Y is based on the SimpleLink SDK. Using SimpleLink SDK may allow you an easier path to other TI products that also use the SimpleLink SDK for application developments. We are actively supporting and promoting TM4C products.

Since both the TM4C129 and MSP432E are the same silicon, the longevity and support will be the same.
