AM2434: AM243 issue with 100 Mbsp CPSW

Dear experts,

I am currently evaluating gPTP performance of a setup involving LP-AM243 boards.

I encountered an issue while testing how background traffic affects time synchronization performance.

The setup is: PC (iperf client) <> LP-AM243 (gPTP timeTransmitter) <> LP-AM243 (gPTP timeReceiver) <> PC (iperf server)

I am running with 100Mbits/s CPSW Ethernet and only a relatively small background traffic introduced with iperf degrades the gPTP performance.

Here is attached logs from both AM243 boards, where you can see the error messages. Iperf traffic is  started around time 60s sending TCP packets on 3Mbits/s rate in both  directions for 10 seconds.

This test was done without auto negotiation, but I encountered the same issue with auto negotiation as well.

I did not have the issue when running with 1Gbits/s CPSW Ethernet. Highest traffic I could achieve with iperf in that case was around 170Mbits/s, and that did not seem to affect the gPTP performance.

Please let me know if you have any insights or suggestions on what might be causing this behavior. Would it be possible to have an online session for figuring out this issue unless there is an easy fix for it?

    Please let me test this in our setup and try to recreate the issue to have further insights. Please expect a reply in 2 working days. Ideally, when the traffic is switching data, it should not reach till the R5 core in the switching nodes, in this case, AM243x-LP boards. My suspicion is that the initial handshake messages which happen with broadcast destination MAC address are entering the stack, and combined with the internal clocking differences for 100M, we are not able to retrieve the timestamps for these packets. 

    I will recreate this in our local setup, and get back with results.

    We have informed the dev team, and the issue is due to the timestamp data not being available when there is large data throughput in 100M mode. They are running some tests to understand the reason behind it. 

    We are also involving the stack team for more inputs on this. I will let you know further details when we get a response from the stack team.

    We were able to root cause the issue to a time stamp processing sequence where the packet is spending more time in the queue before being transmitted out in 100 Mbps mode. We are looking into possible fixes to address this. I will update the thread once we have more details on the final fix that is proposed.

    We have ran the tests, but the issue is still persistent, though not as bad as before. The devices are briefly going out of sync and coming back. But if the idea is to demonstrate the stability of the system, we have an AdHOC workaround which is not impacting the gPTP sync and stability, but the overall throughput is slightly throttled.

    The setup is following: PC (iperf client) <> Microchip LAN9383 (gPTP timeTransmitter) <> AM261 (gPTP timeReceiver) <> Microchip LAN9383 <> PC (iperf server).

    The reason why we are having the failure is because the TSN stack is requesting the hardware for timestamp even before hardware was able to push it out to buffer due to high throughput. To handle this, a crude way to test it is by adding delay in the stack before requesting the timestamp. A better way to implement is to add a polling logic to fetch the timestamp instead of exiting at first try. 

    We are working on finalising the approach to fix this issue. We are able to root cause it, and we are working with our stack team to fix it.
