What is at the other end of the two wires?

If it were my board, my first suspicion would be a solder bridge between the two (adjacent) pins.

Both PE2 and PE3 are switch inputs and there is no solder bridge.

If you try connecting PE2 to PK0, a reset does not occur.

The problem has improved, but I want to know why a reset occurs with PE2 and PE3.

Are these physical switches, e.g. pushbuttons?

What does your firmware do when the GPIOs change state?

These are physical switches, PE2=push button and PE3=limit switch.

When PE3 changes from Low to High, the DC motor drive stops.

When PE2 changes from High to Low, the LED driver switches ON/OFF.

PE2/PE3 aren't defined to generate a Reset, so my suspicions are (a) electrical, e.g. short to GND [first guess] or (b) logic, e.g. stack overflow [second guess].

For (a), I suggest scope probes on PE2/PE3 to check for out-of-spec voltage levels.

For (b), I suggest using the debugger to follow the path through the LED driver when PE2 changes.

When I see "motor" I first think of "noise", though I'm supposing that the motor is off when this happens.

PE3 is mentioned in Erratum ADC#13 [Ref Errata (SPMZ850G) p. 9], though that's only relevant if it is configured as AIN0, which I don't expect is the case here. PE2 isn't mentioned at all.

Neither PE2 nor PE3 is shorted to GND.

I understand that neither terminal is defined for reset.

Electrically, there doesn't seem to be a problem, and I assume it is a logical issue.

When I changed the switch input from PE2 to PK0, the problem was resolved.

Currently, experiments can continue without any issues.
