TMS320C6415: Recommendation for TMS320C6415E / TMS320C6655 Migration to Next-Generation TI Processor (ARM + DSP Platform)

Part Number: TMS320C6415
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C6655, 66AK2H06, TDA4VH

Hello TI Team,

We are evaluating processor options for a long-term redesign of a legacy DSP-based signal processing platform.

Existing Hardware

Our current design includes:

  • TMS320C6415E DSP-based processing boards
  • TMS320C6655/C66x DSP-based processing boards
  • FPGA-connected high-speed acquisition architecture
  • Multiple DSPs performing real-time signal-processing algorithms
  • Ethernet-based host communication
  • Inter-board communication between processing modules

We have reviewed the 66AK2H06 (Keystone II) EVM as a possible migration candidate and would appreciate TI's guidance on the most suitable long-term replacement platform.

System Requirements

We are looking for an SoC with the following capabilities:

Processing

  • ARM + DSP heterogeneous architecture
  • Approximately 8 ARM cores (or equivalent processing capability)
  • C66x/C7x DSP support preferred
  • Real-time deterministic signal processing
  • Long-term TI support roadmap

FPGA Connectivity

  • High-speed FPGA interface options
  • PCIe preferred
  • Alternative recommendations are welcome

Network Connectivity

  • Dual Gigabit Ethernet ports minimum

Inter-Board Communication

Please recommend the most suitable interface among:

  • SRIO
  • PCIe
  • Ethernet
  • Other high-performance alternatives

Memory

  • DDR3/DDR4/LPDDR support
  • Large memory space for high-speed acquisition and buffering

Current Architecture

Our current systems use:

Legacy Platform Interfaces
TMS320C6415E EMIF + FPGA + SDRAM
TMS320C6655 EMIF16 + DDR3 + FPGA
Inter-DSP Communication Custom FPGA / SRIO-based approaches
Host Connectivity Ethernet

Our internal evaluation shows migration paths involving Keystone-II and newer Jacinto devices. We would like TI's recommendation on the preferred long-term platform. Our current designs use FPGA connectivity, DDR memory, and Ethernet communications, while newer architectures have already moved from older PCI-based approaches toward Ethernet and FPGA-centric designs.

Requested Deliverables

  1. Recommended TI processor(s) for a new design.

  2. Migration guidance from:

    • TMS320C6415E
    • TMS320C6655/C66x
  3. Interface comparison:

    • SRIO vs PCIe vs Ethernet
    • Recommended interface for FPGA-to-SoC real-time data transfer
  4. Recommended development kits/EVMs.

  5. Software support roadmap including:

    • Processor SDK support
    • RTOS/Linux support
    • Long-term availability
  6. Recommendation on whether:

    • 66AK2H06 remains a viable long-term choice, or
    • Jacinto family devices (J721E/J721S2/J784S4/TDA4VH, etc.) are the preferred migration direction.

Additional Question

For a new FPGA-based real-time acquisition and processing architecture, would TI recommend:

  • Keystone-II (66AK2H06)
  • TDA4VH / J784S4
  • J721S2
  • Any other currently recommended TI processor

from both a technical and long-term support perspective?

Thank you for your guidance.

Best Regards,
Chittibabu Ch
