Dear TI support,

just short remark - I would say that information in the table Hercules platform family comparison on the wiki page (http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Category:Hercules?DCMP=hercules&HQS=hercules-wiki) are a bit confusing.

If I understand e.g. the numbering and symbol nomenclature on the page 8 of TMS570LS3137 datasheet (http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/spns162/spns162.pdf) correctly, then all TMS570 types which have "LS" letters within their device number shall be considered as LockStep Dual Core, shall not? The table on the wiki page implies that only the type LS20x/10x includes LS core.

Hello Jiri,

Your understanding is correct in your assumption for the TMS570 nomenclature in that the 'LS' designates these devices as dual core lockstep devices. All of the products highlighted below are dual core lock step and I see that there is some inconsistencies in how we describe them. Note also that the all of the RM product line is also dual core lockstep. I will forward your concerns to our marketing manager so that they can address the inconsistencies in the table.

What is "Lockstep" and what impact does it have on the 470r1b1m?

Hello Mike,

have a look eg. at a picture on the page 20 (http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/spnu507/spnu507.pdf) or wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockstep_(computing)) in general.

TMS570 includes two Cortex-R4 cores. They are differently oriented on the chip die (one is 90 degrees turned and mirror located) and clocked (one is 1 cycle delayed) - this is the safety feature, you cannot consider multi-core system ;-)

If I knew it was already answered, I would have approached it that way. How do I find it?

The second question is still unanswered: What does Lockstep have to do with the 470 ( if anything )?

Also, where can I get sample code for using UARTs?

What is the difference between TMS470 and SM470, if any?

As described above the TMS470 is single core, so the Lockstep is not relevant for this processor family.

There are many diffs between TMS470 and TMS570 - please check the TI web e.g. http://www.ti.com/lsds/ti/microcontroller/safety_mcu/tms470_arm_cortex-m3/overview.page?paramCriteria=no

In terms of architecture:

TMS470 based on the Cortex-M core,

TMS570 based on the Cortex-R core.

Code examples for TMS570 can be found e.g. at this link http://www.ti.com/lsds/ti/microcontroller/safety_mcu/tms570_arm_cortex-r4/tools_software.page

It could be similar to TMS470...

As a minor correction, TMS470M is based on the Cortex M core.

Earlier TMS470R1x and TMS470P products are based on the ARM7TDMI. TMS470R1x and TMS470P products were offered primarily to high volume automotive applications rather than on a broad catalog basis. The current TMSx70 catalog offering is based on Cortex M and Cortex R cores.

The 2nd question was about the SM470R1B1M which is still active. It's supported by the Hi-Rel product group.

Was only addressing Jiri's statement that TMS470 = M3.

You are correct that SM470 is active, but this is not a "TMS470" Hercules product, but a Hi-Rel product.
