XDS100v2 Boundary Scan and RM48

I know RM48 supports XDS100 up to v2, it doesn't support v3.

But with all that came a question into my head: Does RM48 with xds100v2 support boundary scan?

  • Pablo,

    RM48 will work with XDS100V2 and V3.

RM48 has boundary scan capability. Which package are you using, I will send you the corresponding file.

  • I plan on using RM48HDK, but still haven't bought it.

But I want to create my own hardware, and on it I plan on puting the XSD100v2 (only without the CPLD, I would only use the FT232). I want to know if I can use boundary scan if I do this.

  • Pablo,

On the RM48HDK, the device is packaged in 337BGA package.
If you design your own hardware, boundary scan will still be possible. This feature is build-in the device.

In theory, any kind of emulator (assuming you have the software running on your host pc) will work with boundary scan.

Do you plan to use an of the shelf software or to develop your own?

  • First I'd like to begin using the jtag with CCS. Then I'd move to an off the shelf software. Probably in the future I'd like to make my own software for my appilication.

On the RM48HDK, the device is packaged in 337BGA package.

Did I understand correctly and only the BGA package contains JTAG?

  • Another question. Does CCS support boundary scan or do I have to buy another software for that? I plan on building a dual-core (2 identical RM48x) and I need to program them and debug them through the same jtag.

  • Pablo,

Boundary scan is available for all package version, not only BGA337.

CCS does not have boundary scan support. It is a debug and compiler environment.
So you will have to buy (or find a free) boundary scan software.

  • Thank you so much for your help.

So if I buy XDS100v2 can I use it with XJTAG for boundary scan?

I'd just have to make a pin board compatible with 14 pin jtag and connect TCK, TDO, TRSTn,  TDI, MSRTCK, RSTn and ECLK from the connector to the pins in the microcontroller?

    Sorry for so many questions.

  • Pablo,

I did some research on XJTAG Analyzer. My understanding is you also need XJLink / XJLink2 — USB 2.0 to JTAG interface.

I don't think an XDS100V2 can be used with XJTAG Analyzer. I will recommend to contact XJTAG to clarify this point.

When you say, "if I buy XDS100v2" you are talking about a full XDS100v2 emulator (~$100.00)
In this case, what you need on your application board is just the micro-controller jtag signals available to a 14 or 20 pins header.
There is no need of cpld, ftdi on the board (they are on the XDS100v2 emulator).

Please let me know if I understand you.

  • That was exactly my question. Thank you for answering.

I've already contacted XJTAG for their support on the RM48x family.

Do you recommend any tools for doing boundary scan with XDS100v2? If there are any.

Or if you can, any other JTAG and JTAG analyzer with which I'll be able to program and debug the microcontroller.

  • Hello Jean-Marc,

I have just one more question: What do i need to write my own boundary scan program for RM48x devices usgin XDS100v2? As you can see I'm rather new to this.

Also .. what software would you recommend me to use for boundary scan?, while I'm not finished with my own program
