Windows XP virtual com port with CCS 5.2.1 and Stellaris launchpad

Mr/Ms,

Working at home (Windows 7 Home Premium) I installed CCS for the Stellaris launchpad and got it working including virtual com port (VCP) connection with Putty and the example "Hello World" program. Then I did the same install on the Windows XP at work. Again the CCS 5.2.1/Stellarisware install seems OK, I can connect the Stellaris LP board, program and run it from CCS debug. However in the XP case although Hyperterminal seems to connect to COM17 (the COM available after plugging in the LP) there is no communication between the PC and the LP. Also tried Putty on the XP. Also tried the uart_echo program in examples in which I could change the baud rate and tried different baud rates. Same result, no communications. On the coming weekend I can try the LP with the PC at home again to see if possibly I damaged the board.

SPECIFIC QUESTION: Are there known problems with the CCS 5.2.1/Stellaris LP VCP that would prevent communications in a simple installation following the published instructions? Note: The XP still works through the VCP connection with a CCS 4.2/MSP430 g2231 launchpad.

  • Hi John,

There aren't any known issues with the configuration you're describing.  Sometimes, depending on the order of connection, I've seen difficultly establishing simultaneous VCP and debug connections.  If you haven't done this already, try closing CCS before launching Hyperterminal.  Also check in Windows Device Manager to make sure that there are no driver warnings (yellow triangles) on the COM port driver.

  • To Jonathon Guy,

After reading your answer I was ready to give up because I had already done what you suggested, but after a good nights sleep I did a search from yahoo "stellaris Launchpad drivers for XP" and landed directly on an exchange in this forum exactly like my problem. Here is the reference,

Dan got his problem fixed. I haven't yet but I will work on it today with renewed hope. Thanks for your answer and to the TI  E2E forum, particularly to Dan K and others who responded to his questions.
