Launchpad Question -- 0-ohm resistors

Hello!

I see that on the Stellaris Launchpad, GPIO PB7 (J2) is connected to PD1 (J3), and PB6 (J2) is connected to PD0 (J3).  Can anyone tell me why these GPIOs are wired together?  I assume that it's something to do with booster pack compatibility, but am not sure (the MSP430s I use don't have the SSI modules)..

If I remove the two 0-ohm resistors that connect these pins, it looks to me like I gain two more IOs.  Question is -- what do I loose?  And what's the best way to remove them?

Thanks.  Would rather not do something foolish and regret it later :-)
