LM3S5B91 NRND M4 replacement?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM3S3748

We recently upgrade from an LM3S3748 to the LM3s5B91 for increase in flash capacity and pin compatibility. We have just become aware of the NRND status. In reading posts on this subject it is the impact on distribution stock that concerns me due to this status. We are just beginning production and having to redesign already is time-consuming and costly. The other issue is that the M4 parts currently available do not support the memory configuration of the previous parts. This will mean I have to move to another manufacture to maintain specification of design.

The parametrics on the M4 so far shows a maximum ram size of 32K. The 3748 was 64K and the 5B91 was 96k. Will there be parts with higher ram capacity in this familt and when?

  • While I cannot give you an exact time frame in a public forum, I can definitely tell you that we do have LM4F devices with additional memory (that covers your requirements) lined up for 2013.  If you need more specific information, I suggest contacting your local/regional sales team for roadmap information.

  • We have the exact same problem, that we cannot get a upgrade for the LM3S5B91 due to too little RAM capacity. But, we are looking at the LM4F232H5QC (32K RAM) together with a Microchip 23LC512 (64K RAM). The external RAM is accessed with SPI at up to 20 Mb/s. In our project we use the 64K RAM as a FIFO buffer and this should be fairly easy to implement this way. You can even get a 128KB version.

When TI has a new version with more RAM, we can choose not to mount the external RAM.
