Stellaris Launchpad Manufacturing Defect

Hi,

I used one of my Launchpads for the first time last week. As I plugged the micro USB cable in for the second or third time, the connector tore off along with some traces. Examination of the connector pads points towards a manufacturing defect - the connector was not soldered properly, resulting in the failure.

Is an RMA process available?

Thank you, George.

If you bought it from the TI online store, their returns process is described there.

If you bought from some other supplier, you will have to ask that supplier.

  • This issue has been noted (others have reported) your prompt return should be w/out issue.

Use of smt for such connectors often yields similar results.  Some similar connectors provide "thru-hole" anchor pins on each side of the connector - which substantially aids connector survival/robustness.  Or - use of "old reliable" "thru-hole only" edge connectors solves.  (note the newer 0.050" pitch 10-pin JTAG-style headers)

Your replacement board will unfortunately repeat this limitation.  You may consider use of a short "gender changer" cable - inserting that only once (and someway/somehow strain-relieving it)  into your board.  All following "make/break" occur at this cable end - never @ your board...
